Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana sets 14th Annual Pow Wow

MARKSVILLE, La., January 28th, 2009 --The Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana would like to welcome all
to the 14th Annual Tunica-Biloxi Pow Wow in Marksville, May15, 16 and 17, 2008. This one-of-a-kind
event will be held on the Chief Joseph “Alcide” Pierite Pow Wow Grounds and features Native-
American dancers, drummers and performers that represent over 100 tribes.

John D. Barbry, chairman of the 2009 Tunica-Biloxi Pow Wow Committee, sums up the experience this
way, “The Pow Wow is an opportunity for Native-American people to share their culture with non-native
people, as well as other tribes. The Pow Wow serves to break down a lot of walls and allow the people
… the first Americans  … to share their story with all.”

According to Barbry, attendees will see tribal customs from “all over the country, actually all over the
continent.”

LOCATION:  Chief Joseph "Alcide" Pierite on the Tunica-Biloxi Reservation, HWY 1 at Marksville, LA.

PARKING:  Available near the Pow Wow grounds and at Paragon Casino Resort.

Lodging\Camping: Paragon Casino Resort offers a Pow Wow rate. Tent camping is available around
the Chief Joseph "Alcide" Pierite Pow Wow Grounds.  

ADMISSION: General Admission - $5; Children (5 yrs & Younger) - $2; Seniors (65 & older) - $3
(Registered DRUMS & DANCERS and Paragon associates w/ badges WILL BE ADMITTED FREE)

Native American Dance Competition:  Golden Age (Age 50 & Up; Men & Women's categories), Adult
(Ages 18-49; Men & Women categories), Junior (Ages 11-17; Boy & Girl categories), Children (10yrs.
& under receive day money on Sat & Sun.). Any one category with less than five (5) dancers will be
combined. Entry fee is $5 for dance competition participants. Up to $28,000 in prizes.

Committee Special:  Traditional Style Dance Contest – Best Man and Best Woman, $1,000 each,
Friday, May 15, 8:30PM. Participants must register and dance in Grand Entry on Friday.

Drum (Singing) Contest:
Three Places in both the Northern & Southern categories; 1st Place $3,000; 2nd Place $2,000; 3rd
Place $1,000. Host drums are not eligible. (Drum Day Money given in past years has been replaced by
this contest.)

*Competition Points start at 1PM Saturday.

TUNICA-BILOXI POW WOW SCHOOL PROJECT
The Pow Wow Committee presents programs on Native American culture for area students on the
Tunica-Biloxi Reservation, May 13-14, 2009. This is a rare and valuable opportunity for students to
learn firsthand about Indian cultures from native people. Call Kayla Johnson for reservations and more
information at (800) 946-1946, extension 1021.

Each day of the Pow Wow will feature dancing and drumming competitions, with the finals set for 12 p.
m. Sunday, May 18th, and the awards ceremony at 4 p.m.
